PCD drill for composites via PM

Tooling giant Walther has developed a sintered polycrystalline diamond (PCD) spiral flute drill manufactured by PM specifically for composite materials such as carbon fibre-reinforced plastics (CFRP) and glass fibre reinforced plastics (GFRP).

It includes a special geometry, says the company, that reduces cutting forces, minimises risk of de-lamination of the material, and has a longer life than a normal PCD-coated tool. It can be re-ground to extend its service life.

The sintering that is part of the PM production process creates a homogenous material that eliminates any need for brazing of drill tips, which can be a source of failure. 
 
Walter says that in a recent demonstration producing holes in an 11.4 mm thick CFRP material which has high strength and rigidity but low density, with layers at 0o , 45o, and 90o , the Walter Titex PCD drill performed more than 6000 cycles before signs of de-lamination began to occur in the workpiece material.
