New molybdenum capacity

Chilean molybdenum producer Molymet is to invest $124US million in a processing plant in the Mejillones industrial complex in northern Chile. Mejillones is a port city situated about 60 km north of Antofagasta.

The plant is expected to enter production at the end of 2009 and have a 15 000 tonnes per year processing capacity to convert molybdenite concentrate into molybdenum trioxide, the company said.
Molymet is a large-scale molybdenum processor with operations in Chile, Mexico, Germany and Belgium. Its products include molybdic oxide powder and briquettes, ferromolybdenum, rhenium metal powder and pellets, and ammonium dimolybdate.
