Diamond/CBN market to hit $1bn by 2012
The global market for diamond, diamond-like and cubic boron nitride (CBN) coatings is set to double in the next five years, according to market research published in the USA.
Global sales of around $473 million last year are expected to rise this year to $530 million this year, says the research from Massachusetts-based BCC Research, then grow at about 14 per cent per year to reach $1 billion in 2012.

The three largest segments of the market in 2006 were razor blades, tools and wear resistant parts, and print/record heads and hard disks. Together these three segments accounted for nearly three-quarters of the market for diamond and diamond-like films and coatings. However, growth rates vary by segment, and while tools and wear-resistant parts and print/record heads and hard disk coatings are growing fairly rapidly, the growth of the razor blades and other consumer applications segment is projected to lag behind that of the market as a while. Other market segments that are growing relatively rapidly include audio speaker diaphragms, electronics, and medical devices.

As a result, BCC expects market shares to shift between 2006 and 2012. The combined shares of the three largest segments (razor blades, tools and wear resistant parts, and print/record heads and hard disks) should drop from almost 75 per cent in 2006 to less than 70 per cent in 2012. Razor blades and other consumer applications in particular are expected to lose market share. Segments that should gain significantly in market share by 2012 include audio speakers and medical devices.

In geographical terms, North America had the largest share of the world market for diamond and diamond-like films in 2006, with 40 per cent of the market, followed by Asia and Europe, in that order. BCC expects North America's market share to hold steady at about 40 per cent through 2012, while Asia loses market share slightly to Europe.

The relative contributions of diamond and diamond-like (including CBN) films and coatings are likewise expected to shift over the period covered by this report. Overall, consumption of diamond-like and CBN coatings was an estimated $330 million, or nearly 70 per cent, of the combined diamond and diamond-like film market in 2006. However, by 2012, based solely on the changing mix of applications, the balance is expected to shift towards diamond films, which should capture about 55 per cent of the market..
