US
Government cash for titanium research
The US Department of Defense is
providing $1 million to support additional research on
compacting titanium powder to full density using patented
adiabatic technology developed by LMC, of DeKalb, Illinois.
The grant supports the formation of the National centre for
Titanium Machining in Rockford, Illinois.
Working with Northern Illinois
University in DeKalb and companies in the Rockford area, LMC
will compact titanium powder made by the Armstrong process
and provide compacted blanks for testing. LMC claims prior
research confirms that its press systems can compact
traditional metal powders close to full density. The company
lists potential markets for titanium parts such as
aerospace, aviation, and biomedical.
Founded in 1980, LMC manufactures high-velocity adiabatic press systems for cutting, blanking, forming, and powder compacting.
