Powder lubricant wins patent
Apex Advanced Technologies of
Cleveland, Ohio, has been awarded a US patent for a new
solid metal powder lubricant for use in the compacting
process.
The company’s president, Dennis
Hammond, was one of the collaborators around two years ago
in the development of what may emerge as a new class of
powders – activated nanopowders.
The U.S. Patent & Trademark Office said: "The present invention provides a lubricant system in the pressing of powders to form a part. The lubricant system is a solid at ambient conditions. However, upon application of pressure during the pressing of the metal parts, the lubricant system forms a liquid phase along the walls of cavity in which the powder is being pressed." US Patent No. 7,183,242 was assigned on February 27.
